Facebook discovery

I have recently discovered that on Face book there is a total of 495 people who are named Noden and have Face book pages. They are scattered all over the world, but predominantly in the US and the UK.

Assuming that each of them has at least 4 living family members, this means the represented population is approximately 2000, Assuming that the percentage of the overall population that has a Face book page is similar in both the US and the UK, which is given as 10% of the overall population, there may be as many as 20,000 Noden's out there. This is a staggering number and makes the whole character of my genealogical inquiries very different than expected.

Alxe & Martin's Trip to the UK

Alxe and Martin had dinner with Lyndsay Noden in her home in Chinley, in Cheshire, this past Monday evening. Family stories and pictures to come later

Wednesday, July 22, 2009

Just in from Cousin Lyndsay in the UK-the following poem she recently authored.

"And I slept

The noise inescapable;
It lay in my head.
A symphony of sound.

I moved to a small
unoccupied part
of my mind

The noise gone.
Symphony silenced.
And I slept

Family update

Mid July and Barbara continues to recover from her health travails, improve her stamina and regain her usual equilibrium.

This week we had a lady who thought that she wanted to buy the Mercedes, but after lots of thinking decided that she ought to be somewhat more cautious and decided against the purchase. This was after a great report by the local MB mechanic, Jim Corbin, and after we produced a sheaf of bills showing what we had done to the car over the past 5 years. Consequently, we will put it on e-Bay and see if we get any takers. If not, it will be off to Proline Motors here on the island for consignment sale.

Lots of good pictures from the visit to Alxe.

It seems an age since our last post. In fact barely a month has gone by, but much has transpired in that short moon phase. The BIG trip has come, been aborted, and gone. Barbara has been in hospitals three times, and indeed today will be released from our local one after a short bout with atrial fibrillation and other associated ills.

Basho & Amanda got married, (we left beforehand because B. was not doing well); SophieJoye gave birth to their new baby, and the world goes on spinning.

Happy Birthday

Monday, May 25 is Barbara's birthday and this afternoon the door bell rang and the lady from the Island florist was standing outside with a giant bouquet of roses and other goodies. After lots of oohing and ahing the delivery lady and I sang Happy Birthday, and Barbara read the attached card from Martin and Alxe. It was a wonderful moment, and so very thoughtful of Martin and Alxe to remember the anniversary.

Kitty in a basket

In the middle of all the hustle and bustle of our preparations for the road trip starting next week, we paused for a moment and watched Max sleeping in his basket and in his perennial state of serene calm. Oh for the bliss of no concerns but sleep food and chasing an occasional gecko.

Recent article

My most recent column in My Nassau Sun can be seen at http://mynassausun.com/node/2171
It was interesting to see how the editing process of my original manuscript produced a much shortened article on the subject of interest rates on consumer debt.

Following up on an idea by Heather Lovejoy, the Editor of My Nassau Sun, the weekly news magazine for Nassau County, I have created a new blog entitled "Tourism Talk" which can be reached at, http://tourismtalk.blogspot.com/

The first major post is my most recent article entitled, "The Ugly Tourist" which is an attempt to rationalize some negative community reactions to the occasional craziness of visitors

Today I have been testing the Skype protocols since I just downloaded the software and bouth a video cam and a headset mike combo. The video is great, and the whole process of setting it up was very easy. Alxe, if you want to go ahead and get a video cam we can have video conferences using this service.

My old pal, Rob Britton was in Manchester this past week doing his visiting scholar bit, and while there went to see my maternal grandparent's old house. Below is the salient parts of his e-mail
I am truly grateful to Rob for all his efforts in locating and visiting the old homestead.

Mac,

Two minutes after speaking with you, I was in front of #40. Looking a bit dodgy, with mattress piled in front window, shipping pallet in front yard, front wall falling down. But I could hear echoes of your beloved grandmother cursing the Luftwaffe. Fainter still, the sounds of sadness on learning that her sons had made the ultimate sacrifice. May she and your gramps rest in peace. It was a good moment for my daily prayers.
A Review by Mac Noden
Of:
“Eternity in their Hearts”
Author:
Don Richardson

ISBN 0-8307-3837-1
Third Edition 2005
189 pages of text plus authors postscript
End notes, study questions & bibliography.

This two part book contains in its first four chapters the outlines of the author’s central premise that cross cultural values and communications are often expressed in a manner that suggests and defines God’s word to many different people, in many different historic periods, in many different cultures and that is understood in many different ways. Notwithstanding the differences in human understanding, the message of the synchronicity of God’s work and word, and the resulting monotheistic human preferences, dubbed by the author as the “Melchizedek Factor” is the constant theme that runs through the first part of this instructive & and well written book.

The starting point of the human story is located in ancient Greece, in a council chamber in Athens as various characters wrestle with the concept of a name for God. Later in the section on the Canaanites, the author speaks eloquently about the mission of Paul as he struggles with the mysteries of the name of Yahweh. In turn, the Indian Santal people, the Mbaka of central Africa, and the Chinese and Burmese peoples all make their appearance as they seek to define the sameness of God presence in their societies.

The adventures contained in Chapter two entitled, “The Peoples of the Lost Book” details the missionary outreach from the Christian west to places in remote parts of Asia. Part one of the book ends with a learned & fascinating discussion and review of some of the strange religious theories that are in effect, the echo of their proponent’s political beliefs. The work of the Englishman, Edward B. Tylor, the promoter of the progressive evolution approach to the formation of the religious beliefs of primitive peoples, is the starting point for a short but rigorous review of western religious thinking on this subject.

In Part Two, Pastor Richardson writes eloquently and persuasively about what he calls, “The 4,000-Year Connection” in which he sets forth the ancient biblical text support for the requirement for mission on the part of believers. The careful review of the exact wording of the Abrahamic Covenant, with its emphasis on being a blessing to others, begins a very powerful discussion of how all peoples of the earth are included, and therefore it should come as no surprise that even the most primitive of societies contain the cultural and behavioral seeds set out by our ancient covenant with God.

In the final chapter of the book, called the “Hidden Messages of Acts” Richardson makes clear that the apostles were very reluctant to see, hear, understand and act upon the imperatives of apostolic outreach. The scriptural retelling of their reluctance, makes very clear that the cross cultural imperatives foreseen and embraced by Jesus in his ministry on earth, was the most troublesome aspect in the lives of the apostles, both during and after Christ’s death on the cross.
The retelling of the history, the excitement of the geographical exploration, the wonder of the revelation of God’s presence in the hearts of people worldwide, all make this book a valuable addition to our understanding of the universality of the one God.
Starting with the Saturday, March 28, 2009 edition, I will be the newest columnist for the newspaper Nassau Sun. See

The column is designed to help "translate" to more common parlance, some of the more complex economic events that affect our local community. The column will be entitled, "Plain Speak"

One more step in the progression from blogger to journalist, to business book author.

Barbara and I are part of a group of fellow church members who get together monthly to have dinner, and get to know more about each other. They are known as Dinners for Eight" and the membership is arranged by a lady in our church with an eye to creating zesty new groups and thereby facilitating fellowship among and between folks who might not see each other outside church events.

Currently, we are part of a group named McHENS. Derivation, the surnames of each family in the group. McFadyen, Harris, Ericksen, & Noden. Not the most inspired but useful as a shorthand identity tool. We had our first dinner last evening at the Ericksen's house and a good time was had by all. See pictures.

Family:

Well here we are with our very own family blog. Y'all have received an invitation to join the fun and today, after a telephone call from Alxe, I changed one of the site default settings in order to enable her, and anyone else who does not have a g-mail account, to see, read and comment on the blog.

So sharpen up your keyboard, and keep in touch with the rest of us, with text and your photos.
